Majestic albatross glide over infinite whitecaps. Day after night after night after day, relentlessly; the natural world pounds out its rhythmic beat as wide-eyed optimist Kestrel Falco flies out to the remote center of The Pacific Ocean. About to become the first ranger stationed on Halfway Atoll Wildlife Sanctuary, he restlessly jostles excitedly in his chair. With shorts and a t-shirt, he looks more like a teen than a man in his early thirties. Son of a lower middle-class bricklayer, psyched and amazed, he bristles with enthusiastic awe as he gazes out the window of a small plane, high over the massive seascape. Has Kestrel gotten far enough away? What does he run from? What are the roadblocks to understanding, and peace? What was your altruistic act today? Join Kestrel on his chaotic, quasi-metaphysical journey through our sometimes-surreal world, navigating through family, friends, co-workers, enemies, nature, and sea and Earth; dodging dangerous sharks and deadlier goons, and most importantly; his search for real true love. Can he survive Halfway, the second most remote spot on Earth? If he can’t, can we? All he needs is a hand; a third hand . . . DRATS

Because this was the only thing new I had on my kindle and with an 8 hour flight to get through I plowed on. Every so often I hit an ah-hah moment where the relevance to today popped up but those were few and far between. The main character Kestrel I describe as smart, driven, passionate, hyper, high-strung, and self-indulgent. For being 34 years old he is pretty immature in his relationships and seems to let the little head control his big head. He has little empathy for others and does not understand why his relationships explode and why the people he has hurt turn vindictive. Way too preachy and drawn out with debates and discussions about religion, his family, the NRA, the environment, politics, etc. It was probably cathartic for the author to write based upon the family dynamics in the book but those scenes were just too blah for me especially as he was trying to get the south Boston (I presume) pronunciations in the dialog. Especially annoying was how he kept letting us know he was going to die in the end. If this ruins it for anyone don't, he alludes to it often enough. If you want to get all interpretive you could analyze and say the old self died as he left the island. Whatever. One of the least enjoyable books I have read in ages with few bright spots to lighten the drudge.

Humans Need Three Hands eBook Drats Reviews

This book grabbed me right from the beginning with a captivating and funny scene between the protagonist and a flight attendant. It showed a truly original new voice, with a very insightful and courageous drive into the inner dialogue and inner world of the main character. I was immediately hooked and it was hard to put the book down from there...definitely worth picking up!!
An entertaining novel that mixes fact, fiction, environmentalism, sarcasm, and chauvinism, with intimate, self-reflective, cognitive fun. Taking place on the U.S.'s Midway Atoll, the cast of characters provides a range personalities almost all can relate to. "Humans Need Three Hands" reads like a fictional story, but with the impact (and the hilarious, colloquial grammar) of a personal biography.
I definitely have some qualms about this book, but I liked it better than most of the books I pick up, and I liked this one better than Drats' second book, Three Days of the Animal Olympians. Be prepared for some outrageous humor (which was great) and a lot of nature, but also, some incredibly sad and depressing philosophical viewpoints juxtaposed to some shocking violence at the end. Worth reading it you love animals.
HN3H sounds like a bird disease, and the human characters and seabirds in this intensely thought-provoking novel will spread through your psyche like a virus! Set on the tiny Halfway Atoll, an incomparable seabird colony with just over 100 human inhabitants, the book chronicles Ranger Kestrel's adventures and battles as he bounces energetically though the predator-filled waters of a wildly diverse community of rednecks, foreign nationals, and environmentalists; a family that truly does not understand him; a heart longing for eternal love; and an ever-present drive to teach compassion for "the other 2 million species on the planet" (new research suggests the number is closer to 8.7!). The shocking conclusion amounts to a literary U-turn! The unique new voice of Drats is destined to change our perspectives on biodiversity, love, and respect for one another. When my bright purple paperbacks (I bought a few for friends) arrived from createspace.com and I plunged in, I was a bit perturbed by Kestrel's somewhat chauvinistic character. However, the book gets better and better as Kestrel evolves and grows. Anyone looking for an exciting, hilarious, and educational read will be sucked into this novel!
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book over the summer. I have to say that the cliché "You can't judge a book by its cover" applies here. My initial impression was that it would be based on a lot of environmental issues with a lot of scientific facts, statistics, and jargon. However, it was educational and filled with humor and emotion. I must admit that the references to song lyrics seemed random and unnecessary. I did enjoy the flashbacks though, about the main character Kestrel's childhood, family & experiences. There are 500+ pages to read, but this book continuously pulled me back with wanting to learn more about Kestrel's world, to experience his trials and tribulations, and to be entertained by the various characters in this story. I feel like I know them & that I have actually been there on Halfway.
