Black Robe - Good book an am enjoying it. Not finished yet but will be soon Wasn't the book I was looking for but turned out to be interesting anyway..
I've before threatened to stop reading Wilkie Collins, but this time I mean it. Maybe. Here was a book with unconvincing characters and nothing at stake. Everyone loves Lewis Romayne for less than no reason--he's condescending, rude, naive, and thoroughly irritable. A Jesuit priest plots to convert him to Catholicism and donate a portion of his estate to the Church. Who cares if the priest succeeds?
The book is so well written. The description of characters is masterful. The ending was a comfort and joy seeing that justice prevailed.
This book was recommended as a "good read." It had a plot, the characterization was well-developed, and the conflict was ever-present. It was an OK read!
I have just read The Black Robe by Wilkie Collins and fell in love it,the book wasn't a mystery as some of his stories are but it didn't have to be.The story was just a great read because of the characters and the plot was unique, the story has a lot of twist and turns and I thought the emotions ran high most of the time.A devious priest tries to manipulate a man into giving a very large and profitable property back to the Catholic church that was given to him by the King,well it all backfires in the end and the man after getting married and being convinced that the marriage wasn't legal then helps him become a priest.He has a son by the marraige and is dying.The end of the book is so good and it makes the reading of the book well worth the time,this book will not disappoint you.
Really good story. Very unexpected. A good read. I have not read anything quite like it. I am assuming that Mr. Collins was not an admirer of Catholicism.
From the first page to the last, the intrigue, the mystery, the surprises just do not end. If you want a wide range of emotion when you read a book, this will give it to you. I found myself startled, delighted, crying, laughing and stunned more than once through this tale. At other times, I found myself raging at the injustices being perpetrated and a shock at the underhandedness of the protagonist and the depths of his depravity.
The way the story is told is magnificent, richly textured and finely drawn. This is a book every bit as good and perhaps a bit better than a Woman in White. You may well find yourself, as I did, examining your own prejudices and preconceived notions as you read this.
I loved this book and is one I will read again and again and is an astounding piece of literature. Enjoy it! Again, you can't beat the price.
